Aerial View St. John* St. John                  St. John is the smallest of the three main United States Virgin Islands. Roughly nine miles long by five miles wide, St. John is 2/3 National park, which means the natural unspoiled beauty is protected. There are no stop lights and no airports here, but there are plenty of world class beaches, old Danish ruins, and even ancient petroglyphs left here by the Tainos Indians that date back to 400 BC. You will not find long stretches of beach lined with condominiums and hotel chains, but rather a quality selection of private villas and homes that preserve the natural beauty of St.John. We have a full time population of approximately 3,500 gentle souls, with as many as 10,000 people on island during our peak season.

A brief history: Long after the Tainos Indians were chased off by the aggressive Arawak Indians, Columbus, on his second trip west, found this paradise and named the large group of islands Las Virgenes. Approximately one hundred years later the Danes settled here in the 17th century and developed huge plantations used for producing sugar, molasses, and rum.

Despite their age, many of the 300 year old sugar mill ruins   can still be explored today. During the next two hundred years the Virgin Islands was a center of trade between Europe and the new world, where slave trading and pirating flourished. Today, you can find hints of our buccaneering past in the names of places such as: Sir Francis Drake Channel, Blackbeards Castle, Bluebeards Castle and Lovango. In 1917, the United States purchased the islands we now call US Virgin Islands, for 24 million dollars. In the 1950's Lawrence Rockefeller purchased large areas of north shore land and donated vast portions to the US government for use as a National Park. This brings us to the 21st century, and what a great time it is to be here.

Dining on St. John: St. John offers some of the finest cuisine available. With local fresh fish and lobster, spices from throughout the Caribbean, and fine chefs from all over the world, St. John is sure to satisfy even the most discriminating palate. If you are just looking for a quick meal, we have that too. Although you will not find fast food chains here, you will find Skinny Legs, Woody's and Dock Side Pub. We still cannot decide who has the best burgers. Local foods are available around the Island and are abundant during weekend festivities and Carnival. Carnival is celebrated on St. John during the first week of July. This is a very busy time of year for us so plan your July vacation early.
